Save your space on the Wounaan Bird Count Tour - today!

Wounaan communities invite you on a 7-day birdwatching tour that includes the Wounaan-led Christmas Bird Count and focuses on the fantastic birdlife of the Wounaan territories of eastern Panama. This tour, the first week of January 2026, is an intimate introduction to Wounaan communities and wildlife, where you will be watching birds and other wildlife alongside Wounaan birders and participating in a powerful citizen-science endeavor.

Many Wounaan community members have been trained as birdwatching guides. 18-year old Moises Puchicama, from Rio Platanares loves guiding others to catch a glimpse of the amazing wildlife diversity in his homeland. “Bird counts and learning to be a guide is a way for me to continue my education,” Moises says.

Birdwatching-based ecotourism not only leverages the rich avian biodiversity of the region but fosters economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation for Wounaan communities. Birds are culturally and spiritually important to Wounaan. This deep connection to nature is reflected in Wounaan traditions, myths, artistic expressions, and daily life. The book An Adventure of Wounaan Children and Many Birds speaks to these connections. On the tour, you will witness first hand the relationships between nature and culture with Wounaan dance,

music, body painting, and arts.
