Help us protect 500 hectares of Wounaan forest for Native Future’s 2009 land tenure efforts!  The traditional lands of the communities of Río Hondo and Platanares are rapidly being destroyed by migrant cattle ranchers.  The Wounaan are taking legal action, both within Panama and internationally, but this effort is costly.  The money you contribute through our Adopt-a-Hectare program will go towards providing the critical support they need to protect their forests and their culture by helping to cover legal fees, transportation costs, and small stipends for the Wounaan leadership coordinating these efforts.  For more information on the activities encompassed in this project, please see our land tenure project plan, available here.

You can adopt a hectare of Wounaan rainforest for $100/year.  Everyone who adopts a hectare will receive a map of the communities’ lands and a stewardship certificate showing the precise location of the adopted hectare or hectares.   At the end of the year, you will receive a report of the Wounaan efforts to gain legal title to these traditional lands that your donation funded.  We will ask you to renew your support in following years, but there is no obligation. 

An adopted hectare also makes a great holiday gift.  If you fill out the gift options section below, we will be happy to make out the stewardship certificate and map in the recipient’s name.
